Artist's Comments

So, originally I wanted to make a new, more authentic pair of stays than my old one, as that is covered in synthetic fabric with the wrong pattern. Finding a piece of cheap real silk brocade, I couldn't help but grab it, planning to make a strapless pair of stays this time, as the ones of my old one always showed when they shouldn't. Also, I wanted a fully boned one with artificial whalebone instead of my old half-boned spring steel one.

Somehow I messed with the pattern - although the 1780s stuff is really cut lower, this one here seems to be too short. I didn't want one of those ren faire wench things I hate to see so much on serious historical events.

But I like the fabric, I love the shape (it's very moderately laced on that picture), so I might hope the upper layers of clothing, if stiff enough, might correct the chest shape, then...

I guess I really should have another try with a better pattern and plain linen.

Wow, the fabric is just great *stares*

.. but I know what you mean with the shape .. I have the smae problem with my blue brocade stays, it would be OK for rococo but it's too short for my elizabethan stuff ...
Let's meet and make new stays together *gg* :D
